Students'
planting catch-up

For the month of March, 10:10ers everywhere were busy digging dirt, sowing seeds and growing greens.

If you didn't get your gloves on in time, don't worry - there's still plenty of time to get out to your allotment/garden/windowbox and start reducing your carbon 'food'print.

Growing your own food has so many benefits, both for you and for the climate:

  • eating locally grown fruit and veg saves on loads of unnecessary air miles
  • food you've grown yourself tastes better! Not only can you cut out a lot of the chemicals and preservatives, but you get that sweet taste of freshness (ok, smugness!) with every bite!
  • Gardening is better exercise than sweating away on a treadmill, and you get a better tan than you would from a bottle

If you haven't got a garden, or the allotment waiting list is longer than a prize-winning marrow at a county fair, why not ask your school, college or university to give you a small patch of unused land to cultivate? If that doesn't work, find a bit of grass (middle of a roundabout, edge of the football pitch, ornamental lawn in front of the science building) and start digging! Don't know what to plant? Start with the 10 easiest things to grow.
