SuperHomes

There's Superman, Super Foods and now there are SuperHomes!

If you are looking to make some 10:10-inspired changes to your house after the Green Deal kicks in, and if one of your guilty pleasures happens to be nosing in other people’s houses, you’re in luck. The Sustainable Energy Academy’s SuperHomes events, showcasing throughout September, should be right up your street!

SuperHomes, a network of super energy efficient retro-fitted homes up and down the country, are opening up to visitors for just 15 days over the coming month. Many will be open during the Heritage Open Days over the weekend of the 6-9 of September. Have a good old snoop around Georgian, Victorian and Edwardian homes which have all had thoroughly modern eco makeovers. To qualify as a SuperHome, a 60% energy reduction must have been achieved, which means that these houses stand as solid proof of the efficiency of the changes their tenants made.

Every SuperHome is different but all of them have a few crucial things in common: they are warm, comfortable, stuffed full of the latest in energy saving technology and pay much less for energy. Superior insulation, alternative heating sources and self-generated energy are only some of the changes you can see in the 50 SuperHomes now open to the public.

If you are into green gadgets, you’ll be able to see the likes of a biomass boiler, heat pumps and water-saving devices in action in a house just like yours.

These SuperHomes may be on a street near you. London, Manchester, Norfolk and Belfast to name but a few. In some cities there are more than one SuperHome to check out and some even open their doors on more than one day.

Some other green homes initiatives like the UK's first certified Passivhaus refurbishment and a pioneering passivhaus retrofit near Shepherd’s Bush will be open to the public during the Open House London events.

SuperHomes are there for inspiration - everyone loves a good nose into other people’s houses judging by the amount of home improvement tv shows that we have in the UK! Seeing the changes you want to make in your house and what difference they make once they are made might be just what you need to finally take the “carbon-cutting plunge”! These are real homes where real people have made their own commitment to reducing their carbon emissions. Come in, snoop around and hear all about the benefits and the challenges of making your home a SuperHome as well.
