Sugru:
the fixer's secret weapon

Inventor Jane Ní Dhulchaointigh explains why she loves repairing, and introduces us to her amazing creation

There's one thing no-one ever tells you about repairing stuff – it makes you feel amazing.

Find your first repair, and go do it. If it's successful, you'll never look back.

Maybe it's a pair of jeans you can patch up, a squeaky chair you can glue back together or a woolly jumper you can mend with woolfiller.

Whatever it is, trust me, that thing you fixed, that thing that used to niggle at you or get left aside unused, will become one of the things you like the most.  You'll choose that chair over others now, and every time you sit in it and feel how solid it is.

I'm passionate about helping people take control over the stuff in their lives, and repair it, adapt it, personalise it or improve it when it's needed. Why should we have to buy new stuff all the time? We shouldn't!

That's why I invented sugru – a new self setting rubber that feels like Playdoh from the pack, sticks to things and turns into rubber overnight.

What are the things you most enjoy living with? The things you love? They're probably not new, right?

People use it to repair everything from hiking boots to dishwashers to iPod cables. Every day they post pictures online to inspire their friends and family to start repairing too. They've felt that thrill I was talking about.

There's probably never been more of an appetite for repairing – people are getting fed up with how wasteful our system is. You don't need to see the fields of e-waste in India and west Africa to want to understand the appeal of making things work better and last longer. Think about it - what are the things you most enjoy living with? The things you love? They're probably not new, right?

The community of people using sugru has grown from around 100 to 100,000 people, and they're now in 110 countries around the world.

The future for sugru is exciting - we want to help grow a movement of repairing and improving stuff, and we're feeling a huge pull from people who want to make this happen. The 10:10 Remade project is another great sign it's already happening.

There's never been more of a reason to repair, and it's never been easier and more enjoyable.  There are all kinds of new services and products cropping up that make it not only possible, but satisfying and fun. Apart from sugru, which you can find at www.sugru.com, check out these awesome things!

P.S. Here at sugru we're growing fast - so if you're passionate about our vision to get the world repairing, and you'd like to work with us - do get in touch! My email is jane@sugru.com
