Lighter
evenings: your time to shine

10:10 Lighter Later

18 months ago we launched Lighter Later, a campaign to change the clocks for lighter, lower-carbon evenings.

We wanted to prove that climate policy could change the way our communities work for the better, and thanks to a brilliant lobbying effort from thousands of your fellow 10:10ers, we've taken this issue further forward than it's been for decades. Now we need your help to clear the next hurdle.

There's a landmark vote happening in parliament on 20 January, and we need your MP's support to make sure it goes our way.

Has your MP agreed to be there? Use our online tool to find out and drop them a line

How it works

The idea behind Lighter Later is simple: we shift the clocks forward by one hour throughout the entire year, moving an hour of daylight from the morning to the evening, when more of us are awake to enjoy it. The evidence suggests that Lighter evenings would mean less carbon (because we won't need to keep the lights on for as long each day), safer streets, more jobs and healthier communities. You can read more about the benefits here

The 20 January vote is on the Daylight Saving Bill, which would start out with a review of the evidence for and against change, followed by a three-year trial of whichever system the review recommends. It's a cautious, evidence-based approach that makes sense even if you haven't made up your mind on the issue yet.

But to get there we need to get 102 MPs along on the 20th to vote in favour, and that'll only happen if they're feeling the pressure from constituents like you.

Could you ask your MP to support the Daylight Saving Bill on 20 January?

How do I do it?

Easy! Just click through to our cunning MP-lobbying tool. Enter your postcode and it'll give you writing tips based on your MP's current position on the issue.

Is there a pre-written template I can use?

There's no template message, but don’t worry. MPs have told us that personal messages are much more effective in changing their minds, and we’ll give you lots of pointers to help you put it in your own words.

As 10:10ers we're already working to save energy at home, at work and in our communities, proving that society can still make progress on climate change in these difficult times. Policy campaigns like Lighter Later are the other side of the same coin, using the combined power of our actions to influence the bigger picture.

This is a huge opportunity for the 10:10 community – let's make sure we grab it!
