Pitch
Pledge Party: the longlist

We had some superb applications for Pitch Pledge Party – our judging panel could easily have given one of the three coveted pitching slots to at least 30 of the projects that applied.

Just to give you an idea of how tough it was to choose, here's a selection of projects that the judges had to pass over.

  • An energy playground in the foyer of Arcola theatre, for visitors to plug, pedal & play to learn about energy generation and consumption, and publicise the eco-theatre within.
  • A school project to involve high school pupils in drastically cutting their school's carbon footprint, reducing energy bills and encouraging behaviour change from the LLES Young Energy People.
  • A mobile phone application designed to influence people's behaviour by teaching them how to save energy while cooking and providing low carbon recipes.
  • A smarter driving training scheme for Oxford council, to educate staff and licensed taxi drivers to drive in a more eco-friendly way.
  • A scheme to change the behaviour of residents from 85 flats to reduce their waste sent to landfill; increase the rate and quality of recycling, and convert food waste into compost.
  • A free online Carbon Management Library, from 3 Carbon Elements, including policy and research papers, publications and presentations looking at various carbon management fields.
  • Home packs helping people to 'Jump into Your Jumper', keep cosy and cut carbon this winter with loads of eco-tips and tools for keeping wrapped up, all from Global Action Plan. Plus they will be sending young people – and their jumpers – to a location near you to spread the warmth to as many people as possible!
  • A Community Orchard at Northfield Eco Centre using solar PV panels for onsite generation of renewable energy, using the feed in tariff profit to plant trees though a local community scheme. Plus community demonstrations to encourage greater take up of the technology by Birmingham householders.
  • Workshops and advice clinics empowering students to save energy, make their homes warmer and cut carbon by making practical improvements in their homes through  People and Planet's The Big Green Makeover.
  • Training and support for eight local residents from high density social housing estates over a 12 month period on how to lead more sustainable lifestyles, as ‘Green Gurus’. Also presenting at community events and would providing a monthly drop-in service for local residents.
  • Courses from MakeyourhomeEco to explore and demystify home energy and inspire and enable people to act to save carbon, energy and money at home.
  • Taking employee engagement to a new level by piloting a Low Carbon Living scheme in the workplace for Oxford council staff.
  • A council pool bike scheme; using reconditioned abandoned bicycles to provide a set of shared bikes for Oxford council staff to travel to work.
  • Production of a promotional film, ‘Crimestoppers: Attempted Carbon Reduction’, to engage Oxford council staff in reducing carbon emissions and creating a social norm around carbon reduction.
  • A global network, 'Plant for the Planet', of young people that want to fight the climate crisis by planting trees and by showing to other young people that they, too, can make a difference.
  • A bike pool scheme at Roehampton University, helping to reduce car usage amongst the 1,000 staff and 8,000 students.
