The Isle of Wight parish launches its 10:10 commitment

Opening of Newport's 10:10:10 event

Newport on the Isle of Wight got in a day early with their celebrations, and the parish council in the town held an event to sign up local residents and businesses, having joined 10:10 on October 9th.

Among the events, highlights included:

  • The Isle of Wight Council promoting their insulation and car-share schemes, whilst giving away free stand-by eliminators.
  • The local library and Waterstones store had displays on ethical and green books - the library also advertised their free smart meter loan scheme.
  • Groups promoted local produce, cycling and walking routes and the benefits of wind energy.

Each new 10:10 sign-up was given a checklist, switch-off stickers and a window sticker specially designed for the Isle of Wight. Ten lucky 10 year olds who signed up with their families were given an exclusive T-shirt, designed for the day.

The whole event was broadcast live on local internet radio station Vectis Radio, who will be running regular features in future on how Newport Parish Council and others on the Isle of Wight are meeting their 10:10 commitments.

Keep watching for the site for more news on the events taking place across the country… and around the world.
