The biggest rivals in Portuguese football unite in cutting carbon

Sporting Lisbon and Benfica go 10:10

On 10:10:10, even the greatest rivals are uniting to cut their carbon. We've just been told the amazing news that Sporting Clube de Portugal (known to British fans as Sporting Lisbon) have signed up to 10:10 - matching the commitment of local rivals Benfica to reduce their emissions by 10% in a year.

Now my Portuguese is far from perfect, but with a quick look through this blog written by our friend João in Portugal, I can see, amongst other things, Sporting have:

  • Announced the commitment to their fans, encouraging them to travel to games on public transport and sign up to 10:10 themselves.
  • Begun separating and recycling matchday waste.
  • Installed solar water heaters in their academy, with plans to convert their swimming pools to solar heating as well.

Alongside the pioneering efforts of Benfica, this means Lisbon is setting a new standard for sporting cities around the world.

Incrivel! (Apparently that's amazing in Portuguese.)
