12,000
facilities managers can't be wrong

Richard Byatt, corporate and public affairs director at the British Institute of Facilities Management on the Institute's 10:10 commitment

Photo from BIFM Annual ConferenceThe British Institute of Facilities Management has around 12,000 members - most of them individuals working on the frontline of carbon reduction, running all sorts of buildings, from schools and universities to offices, hospitals and retail sites.

The biggest influence BIFM can have is through the work of our members. However, we also need to set an example in the way we run our own facilities. So when the 10:10 campaign was launched we were attracted by the simplicity of the objective and signed up immediately.

We're really only at the beginning as it's taken a while to pull together our baseline data, but now we're ready to work with all our staff on reducing our carbon emissions.

As well as tackling utility usage and flights, we'll also look at business mileage undertaken in private cars and commuting.

I look forward to sharing our progress with our staff, members and the wider facilities management community.
