Case
study: Penryn College

This Cornish college has seen 10:10 success by tackling the basics. But they're not stopping there...

Penryn College

From lightweight wine bottles to leaner website code, we've seen lots of imaginative 10:10 actions recently. Often, however, the biggest savings can come from tackling the basics.

Take Penryn College down in Cornwall, for example. By combining a student-led switch off campaign with improved lighting, heating and IT, the've managed to cut their energy usage by 16% this year. Run the numbers and this gives you a yearly cost saving of more than £50,000. Simple but effective.

These achievements quite rightly got top billing in Penryn's college newpaper – the Pennant, but – and this is crucial – they understand that the first 10% is just the beginning.

If we can keep this effort up hopefully we will hit our next year’s target of another 10% drop in energy use for 2011.
If this year's performance is anything to go by, I suspect they've got a few more 10 percents in them yet!
