10:10 inspires and supports people and organisations to cut their carbon emissions by 10% in a year.

Any individual, family, business or organisation can make the cuts - and by working together we can make a real difference.

Global
news round up

This week, we've been keeping our fingers crossed (and phonelines busy) for the Daylight Saving Bill, debating on Reading's climate change strategy and celebrating Chiang Mai's low carbon future.

The scene from 10:10 HQ as the Lighter Later debate unfolds in parliament. We've had about eight hours sleep between us.

  • It's a big day for the Lighter Later team in the UK today: the Daylight Saving Bill was debated in parliament this morning. To everyone's disappointment and frustration, a couple of hostile MPs were derail the bill with a series of 'wrecking amendments' designed to waste time so the bill wouldn't go to a vote. You can read a full account of what happened here.
  • Earlier this month, no other than Virgin's Richard Branson blogged his support of the move for lighter evenings. In this blog, Maddy explains further about the advantages and the vote happening in Parliament today.
  • Remember the 10:10 community in Steyning? Looks like they're making great progress towards their aim of going solar: 40+ solar roofs, and counting!
  • Last week, over 100 people from all sectors of the community in Reading attended an event entitled "Reading Means Business on Climate Change". As Reading Council has signed up to 10:10 (and achieved a respectable 8.4% in their first action year), and the Reading-based primary schools E.P. Collier, New Town and New Christ Church are participating in the Solar Schools pilot, Amy and I were invited along. The purpose of the event was for attendees to have their say in the initial development of Reading’s next climate change strategy. Check out the details here.
  • 10:10ers in Chiang Mai, Thailand, hosted the 3rd Low Carbon Children's Day last weekend. The group's aim is to promote Chiang Mai as a healthy, clean, low carbon city, and constantly add to the 10,000+ signatures in support of this. Next hurdle is to get local businesses and organisations on board to strengthen the pledge.
  • Last but not least, the 10:10 office in London will be hosting the lovely people from Solar Aid for one of their excellent Sunny Schools training sessions sunnyschools.org on February the 7th. We will be inviting 10:10 schools from around London so hopefully it will be a great chance to put faces to some names! Contact amy@1010uk.org for details.
